Australia Skilled Visa Update 2026 | New Processing Priority Order Under Ministerial Direction 119

Australia has introduced a new skilled visa processing priority structure under Ministerial Direction 119, effective from July 25, 2026. The updated direction changes how the Department of Home Affairs processes skilled visa applications, including Subclass 186, 482, 189, 190, 491, and 494 applications. The changes also apply to pending applications.

The new priority system is based on both occupation and applicant location. The five processing tiers are:

1. Law enforcement and defence occupations where the applicant is in Australia.

2. Law enforcement and defence occupations where the applicant is outside Australia.

3. Construction, healthcare, or teaching occupations where the applicant is in Australia.

4. Other applications where the applicant is in Australia.

5. Other applications where the applicant is outside Australia.

For India-based applicants, the important point is that having a priority occupation such as healthcare, teaching, or construction does not automatically provide faster processing when applying from outside Australia. The location of the applicant also affects priority placement.

The update also notes changes affecting regional and accredited-employer-sponsored applications, which no longer receive the faster processing position they previously had. Applicants should review their situation carefully and verify the latest information through official Australian immigration sources.
