New Zealand SMC Residence Pathways 2026 | Two New Routes Start 24 August

From 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand is introducing two new residence pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, bringing the category to three routes alongside the existing points-based pathway.

The new Skilled Work Experience Pathway is designed for applicants working in, or holding a job offer for, ANZSCO Skill Level 1 to 3 occupations. It requires at least three years of relevant work experience gained within the previous 10 years, followed by two separate years of qualifying skilled work experience in New Zealand at or above the SMC wage threshold. Applicants using this route do not need to meet the standard six-point requirement.

The new Trades and Technician Pathway is aimed at skilled trades and technical workers and is based on relevant qualifications and qualifying work experience. Applicants may need to provide employment agreements, job descriptions, tax records and certificates of service for overseas experience. Self-employment does not count toward the required work experience.

The new pathways have important exclusions. ANZSCO Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations cannot use the Skilled Work Experience Pathway, while occupations on New Zealand's Red List are excluded from both new routes. Amber List occupations can qualify under additional requirements, including a higher wage threshold of 1.2 times the SMC threshold and a longer New Zealand work experience requirement.

The existing points-based SMC pathway will continue alongside the new options. Applicants need to satisfy the requirements of the pathway they choose. As these are immigration rules, applicants should verify the latest eligibility criteria and official guidance directly with Immigration New Zealand before making an application.
